Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder

Setting Powder is probably one of the less talked about product in the makeup world. Everyone will rave about the newest palettes or foundations but I find that setting powders are just a one-day topic. So when I discovered the Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder months ago, sharing a review is definitely not on my list. However, after wearing it on a daily basis, I realized that sharing my thoughts about this powder is just fair. If you are thinking of snagging this powder on your next Sephora trip, this post is for you!

What do I like about it?

What intrigued me the most about this product is Hourglass’ claim that it is infused with diamond powder. Although I somehow doubt its validity, I can attest that this helped to keep my makeup last longer whilst giving me a natural glow.

Since I have a combination skin, I actually only planned on using this powder during the summertime to control my t-zone. Impressively, it did help to make my skin shine free even after a sweaty episode. However, as the temperature slowly goes down and my skin gets drier and drier, I fear that it would start to give me some negative results. But because the powder is finely milled, I still find it easy to blend into my skin without leaving any chalky residue on my dry areas. I find this really impressive because this result is different from a few powders I’ve used before which made me scared of using powders during the colder season. I guess I’ll be using this powder all year round!

Although this is designed to be used as a setting powder, I also use it to bake my undereye and cheek area. In my opinion, it also works well because it doesn’t leave my skin too white or powdery. I actually find that it helps lighten my undereye especially on days when I lack sleep. I guess it is also important for me to say that the powder does not cling into my fine lines which I find really impressive so I am really trusting this powder for my skin type.

What I did not like about it?

This powder comes in two different sizes. The standard size (10.5 g) which is sold for $55.00 CAD and the mini size (.07 oz) is sold for $22.00 CAD. With what it’s for and the amount of product, I find the prices a bit too much. I guess we can blame the diamond powder for its price? Laura Mercier’s Translucent Setting Powder which is almost everyone’s favorite, for instance, is cheaper at $48.00 CAD (Regular size) for a 30 ML product. With this calculation, I would highly repurchase the Laura Mercier Setting Powder than the Veil Setting Powder.

Packaging is one of the reasons that tempted me to get this powder but it easily became a huge drawback to me. The custom cap is cute and all especially with the letter H in it but it makes it very difficult to get the powder out without making a huge mess. It’s also difficult to control the amount of product I would want to use causing a lot of waste.

The Verdict

I would give this setting powder a 4 out of 5 stars. Although I really liked how the product performed, I cannot shake off the thought that this is a bit overpriced considering the amount of product that you are getting. I am also not a fan of the lid. Although it is cute I still find it a bit difficult to control the amount of product that you are getting. But I have to commend Hourglass for releasing a powder that’s usable for all skin types.

Have you tried this powder yet? Would you recommend it?
