7 Reasons Why You Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Day

We all heard the importance of wearing a sunscreen perhaps too many times before. Redundant as it may sound, many still neglect to add SPF to their daily routine. If you ask me over a year ago, I would tell you straight that I don’t see the need of wearing one in a daily basis. Sunscreen for me was a Summer thing but not necessarily a part of my daily routine. However, as I try my hardest to improve my skin regime, I discover so many things that I overuse and misuse. One of them is sunscreen. So if are like me who’s been ditching the much-needed SPF, here are 7 Reasons Why You Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Day to encourage you to start wearing one now!

1. It minimizes your risk to Skin Cancer.

We are all aware of the damage that the Sun’s UV rays can cause not only to the environment but to the humanities. One of the dangerous damage that it can cause us is skin cancer. In fact, it is the leading cause of skin cancer which is why a preventive measure is important. Wearing sunscreen every day can provide the protection that our skin needs thus minimizing the risk of skin cancer.

2. It can prevent premature aging.

This may sound surprising since many sunscreen products do not contain anti-aging ingredients in their labels. However, since the SPF protects our skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays and other environmental toxins, it helps to slow down the skin’s aging process.

3. Avoids Sunburn

Avoiding a sunburn is probably the most common reason why we are encouraged to use a sunscreen especially before hitting the beach. Sunburns can be very painful and damaging to the skin so wearing a sunscreen prior to sun exposure is very important.

4. Enhances your skin’s health.

Our skin is made up of 80% Collagen which is an important protein responsible to make our skin stronger. It is also often called the wrinkle-preventing protein since the abundance of it in the body can slow down the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the skin. Wearing a sunscreen can help protect this protein in the skin thus keeping its benefits intact for a strong and healthier skin.

5. It makes your skin tone even.

Sunscreen not only prevents sunburns that can cause skin discoloration but it also prevents any brown spots caused by over sun exposure.

6. The Sun’s UV rays can still be damaging even when the Sun is not out.

One of the wrong notions we have is the belief that when the sun is not out, we are safe from the UV rays. Wrong! Because the sun’s UV rays can still penetrate the clouds making it equally damaging than of a sunny day. This is why incorporating a sunscreen on your Winter or Autumn skincare is still very important.

7. You can get sun damage even when you are indoors.

We will break another myth today with this final point. Yes! We still get sun damage even when we are indoors so it is still recommended to wear sunscreen even if you typically spend the whole day of your day in your office. The sun’s rays can still bounce through the windows delivering the same damaging effects to your skin.

Tips to Consider

If you are looking to start wearing SPF as a part of your daily routine, here are a few points that you should remember!

  • Purchase a sunscreen that is labeled as 30 SPF or more. This is the minimum SPF that most dermatologist would recommend.
  • Choose sunscreens that are labeled as a broad spectrum which means it can protect your skin on both sun’s  UVA and UVB rays,
  • If you have a sensitive skin, only purchase sunscreens that are non-comedogenic and water-based to avoid your skin from breaking out.
  • Buy sweat- or water-resistant sunscreens since their effect last longer even after being exposed to water.
  • Wear sunscreen at least 30 minutes before sun exposure.
